Racing with Care2Tri, a non profit triathlon organization based out of Sarasota County in Florida has been “a dream come true” for Kirk Birchfield. Kirk has Cerebral Palsy, which has acted as a barrier for his love of participating in sports. If you walked into Kirk’s bedroom today, you would instantly recognize his love of sports by the green and orange color combination on his walls (the Miami Dolphins football colors).
Kirk has participated in several triathlons with Greg Simony (founder of Care2Tri and tri-athlete himself) over the last 2 years. While Kirk has participated in each portion of the race with Greg, the bicycle is by far his favorite. Care2Tri has a special bicycle with a trailer made by Wike attached to the back of it. Greg rides the bicycle during these tri-athlons with Kirk riding in the trailer behind him. During the ride, Kirk is able to participate in a competitive sport with fellow athletes. When asked about his experience participating in these races, Kirk tells me that “it makes me feel good to ride because it feels like I am peddling myself”.
Second to his love for sports, Kirk enjoys being a part of the media. Through Care2Tri and their outreach to the community, Kirk was covered as a part of a piece on the channel 7 evening news. Kirk was able to speak about his love for racing, and how happy it makes him feel.
